Know the condition & the procedure
This page explains why the condition may cause symptoms, how doctors evaluate it and what the procedure is intended to do. It is educational information, not a personalised treatment plan.
What does this procedure mean?
A pressure-gradient study measures pressures within the hepatic/portal venous circulation using a catheter. It helps assess the haemodynamic significance of portal hypertension.
HVPG (Hepatic Venous Pressure Gradient)
Symptoms / reasons you may be evaluated
- Abdominal swelling or fluid accumulation
- Enlarged spleen or low blood counts related to portal hypertension
- Variceal bleeding or other complications of advanced liver disease
- Abnormal liver imaging or laboratory findings
When might it be considered?
The study may be recommended when portal-pressure information will help diagnose, stage or plan treatment for liver and portal venous disease.
How do we check it?
Clinical history, liver tests, imaging and previous endoscopy or portal-hypertension assessment are reviewed as appropriate.
How it is usually done
Possible benefits / goals
- Provides direct haemodynamic information
- Can help clarify the severity of portal hypertension
- May be combined with other transjugular procedures when appropriate
- Uses a catheter-based approach
Risks & things to know
- Bruising or bleeding at the access site
- Transient discomfort
- Rare vascular complications or infection
- The result must be interpreted together with clinical and imaging findings
Before the procedure
- Bring relevant reports, scans and medication details.
- Tell the specialist about allergies, blood thinners and important medical history.
- Follow any fasting, medication or preparation instructions given specifically to you.
- Arrange an accompanying person if the clinic advises this because of sedation or the expected recovery.
After the procedure
Most patients need only short observation, but instructions vary with any additional procedure performed at the same sitting.
