What does this procedure mean?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted superficial veins caused by abnormal venous flow, often related to valve failure. Ablation closes the problem vein; sclerotherapy uses an injected medicine to treat selected smaller veins.

When might it be considered?

Treatment may be considered when symptoms, venous reflux on ultrasound, recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis, skin changes or other clinically relevant venous disease is present.

- Temporary bruising, tenderness or tightness
- Inflammation or superficial thrombophlebitis
- Skin colour change or irritation after sclerotherapy
- Rare but important complications such as deep-vein thrombosis or nerve/skin injury

Before the procedure

- Tell the specialist about allergies, blood thinners and important medical history.
- Follow any fasting, medication or preparation instructions given specifically to you.
- Arrange an accompanying person if the clinic advises this because of sedation or the expected recovery.
